I was going to pan this, but then I got into a fight with ubuntu intrepid while trying setting up a development box at work. Granted, it was ruby 1.9 and rails 2.2.2, but it still should have gone more smoothly. If you're not too linux savvy, I'd suggest following a guide that's been created relatively recently for something in the 1.8 train.
