The drive I got is 9.5 IIRC.  From what I've seen the 5300 drive bay should
hold any size 2.5" IDE drive, certainly anything new.

Rotational speed is the same (4200 RPM) but access time for the same amount
of data should be shorter, there are a lot more tracks packed into the same
space.  I didn't time the startup or anything else so I have no quantitaive
information.

All the ones I've seen are NiMH.  Apple originally designed the 5300 for
LiIon but some of the early ones caught fire so Apple switched to NiMH.
Later models take the same batter form factor and use LiIon but those
batteries are not supposed to work in the 5300.  5300 Batteries will work
in other machines though.  BTI makes a battery for the 5300 that is
supposed to have twice the A-h rating of the stock battery (at least as far
as I've been able to determine).  I haven't tried one yet.
