A consortium of local companies will fund the translation effort, creating
LPI-Japan

TORONTO, August 14, 2000 -- The Linux Professional Institute announced
today the
commencement of the translation of its Linux certification exams into the
Japanese
    language.

The translation project, which is expected to be completed by the fall of
2000, is to be
funded by a consortium of companies dedicated to the advancement of Linux
in Japan.

"Creation of LPI's exams in Japanese is a natural part of our mandate,"
said LPI President
Dan York. "As a truly global organization, we want to make the LPI program
as assessible
as possible worldwide. This is the first of what I hope will be other
efforts to offer the LPI
program in languages other than English."

The Japanese translation of the LPI website is complete and may be seen at
    http://www.yesitis.co.jp/LPI/.

Consistent with LPI's non-profit, community operations, York said the drive
for the
translation came from Japanese Linux vendors and users. "Like LPI's own
creation, the
creation of this project was a grassroots effort, backed by the kind of
people and
organizations that have already brought LPI so far in so little time." York
said LPI is also
working with groups to produce and promote the LPI program in German,
French and other
    languages.

Gen Narui, chairman of the LPI Japan secretariat, said that the group
effort is working to
make Linux certification more popular within Japan. "We are very pleased to
be working
with LPI and advancing this program within," said Mr. Narui, who is also
Director of SGI
Japan Ltd. "We look forward to its continued success."

The LPI Japan secretariat has been established within the Tokyo head office
of SGI Japan
Ltd. The group will fund the translation of the LPI program into Japanese,
and also promote
LPI and Linux certification within Japan. Yasuyuki Kido, President & CEO of
NEONAGY,
INC. is vice-chairman of the secretariat. Other directors are

Kuniteru Kojima, President of TurboLinux Japan
Michinori Nakahara, Linux business development manager for IBM Japan
Jay Powell, Managing Director, Asia Pacific Operations of Linuxcare

Dr. Jun Murai, Professor at the faculty of environment and information at
Keio University,
is the group's auditor. Other organizations supporting LPI Japan are
Fujitsu, Hitachi, NEC,
Keio University, Tokyo Win Support, Inc. Otsuka-shokai, 10-art-ni,
Kanematsu Computer
    Systems and Yokogawa Engineering Service.
