Unless like me, you mainly look after internet-facing servers where you always want the latest up-to-date security-patched distos :-) I used CentosOS 5.2 and Debian Etch (running on an NSLU2) to help pass LPI1. What I found useful is to use something like VirtualBox (http://www.virtualbox.org/) and grab an older distro like Debian Sarge for coverage of older software without having to dedicate another physical box to it.
