Well, I got a really cool iron ring when I finished my engineering programme
at university :)

Seriously, though, that added values would be in having a community of peers
(maybe we create a linkedin group), petitioning gov'ts for formal
recognition, perhaps it does the professional recertification vetting?, group
benefits (that's one of the things the licensed engineers seem to like; cheap
car, life, etc insurance), whatever local chapters/orgs decide to do, a
'better business bureau' type of service (or at least a complaints
mechanism), etc...


Also, I'm not certain what other organizations are providing this sort of
thing for FOSS professionals.  Can you send some URLs?
