Both Fedora 9 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5
include the "vol_id" binary:
- Package: udev
- Path: /lib/udev/vol_id

Likewise, both:
- Package: e2fsprogs
- Path: /sbin/blkid

Also, we should not forget ...
  /dev/disk/

Such as ...
  /dev/disk/by-id/
  /dev/disk/by-label/
  /dev/disk/by-path/
  /dev/disk/by-uuid/

It's the first thing I teach people when it comes to
locating usable storage devices, storage slices (in
various disk labels) and any, existing filesystems. ;)

I don't have a "favorite Linux distro." I use, develop
and support community efforts, often built around Linux.
Technology and solutions are my focus, not dragging in
assumptions, marketing and other concepts which dominate
non-community developed software, which I left long ago.
