Perhaps...but at what point does it become coddling? Is the level of 'character set', quantifier, and groupings too much? PS - I'm ambivalent on REs making it into this exam. If fgrep is used as a gateway to REs, that's fine. But REs do show up as core parts of Perl, Tcl, Awk, and other commonly used languages. Used in tools like grep, Apache, vi, nano, etc..
