Hi,
While preparing for my LPIC-1 exams, I've noticed that much of Topic 106
(User Interfaces and Desktops) seems really dated. I'm working on Ubuntu
12.04 (gnome-fallback) and Fedora 17 (Gnome) and, as far as I can tell,
most of the config files and utilities included in the current Detailed
Objectives no longer exist by default. More than that, I get the
impression that the Linux developers have been trying to move us towards
the GUI and away from manually editing config files for X - perhaps
because of the trouble such edits so often cause.
Also, is it just because I personally haven't come across it, or is X
font server really an anachronism?
Here's a partial list of files that no longer seem to exist on either
Ubuntu or Fedora (in case of xorg.conf, it hasn't existed by default
since version 9.10):
/etc/X11/xorgConf
/etc/X11/XF86Config
/etc/X11/xdm
/etc/X11/xdm/xdm-config
etc/init.d/init_script
/etc/X11/gdm
/etc/inittab (Fedora reported: "inittab is no longer used when using
systemd")
Are my impressions about the relevance of most of Topic 106 correct? Is
this something that is undergoing revision?
Thanks for everyone's work,
David Clinton
