The unfortunate fact is that apparently many candidates aren't really interested in real-world knowledge; they're interested in learning *exactly* what they need to pass the exam (and if at all possible not one iota more). Hence the persistent interest on the part of candidates in »brain dumps«, which ideally let them pass the exam with a minimum of rote learning (or so they believe, anyway). This frequently runs contrary to an instructor's desire to teach students what one thinks they ought to know for the real world (as opposed to the exam). While sometimes it would be nice if the scope of some of the black-hole type LPIC objectives could be limited, just so one knows where one can safely stop with topics like »sed« or »PDQ«, it is probably better for the objectives not to spell out everything in detail because that will only lead to more »teaching to the exam«, when in fact we don't really want to teach specific commands and their options and parameters – we want to teach concepts and techniques that can't really be tested very well directly. These concepts and techniques in turn serve as a prerequisite for successful daily Linux use and, through that, for building up the real-world experience that we want successful LPIC candidates to prove they have.
