Just an opinion

Syslog-ng is much more secure.

It is a bad security practice to add suid to scripts.

Hi,
  Currently the 108.2 topic says:

"Candidates should be able to configure the syslog daemon.
[...]
Key Knowledge Areas
[...]
    syslog
[...]
Terms and Utilities
    syslog.conf
"

I believe that many distributions for good reasons uses rsyslog or syslog-ng
today and that have been the cases for some years.

So I suggest that at least knowledge of syslog-ng, rsyslog exist or even
better syslog-ng configuration should be added.

Hi,

Under 105.2 Customize or write simple scripts it says:
"
Description: Candidates should be able to customize existing scripts, or
write simple new BASH scripts.
[...]
Manage the location, ownership, execution and suid-rights of scripts.
"

However you can set the suid-bit on shell-scripts but it will have no effect
so I suggest that it is removed from the objectives.

Other Unix versions do support the SUID bit on scripts, so knowing that
Linux intentionally ignores it (and why) may in fact be useful.

Hi,

I would think that syslog should be presented as the "basic knowledge" with
concepts and how it works and then recommended as improved/newer options
the rsyslog and syslog-ng and/or other logging systems?

I don't know much about syslog-ng but if there're common parts (concepts,
the way some things work etc.) with rsyslog and/or other logging systems
probably they should be included in the "basic knowledge"?

Regards,
JL

Version 4.0 of the LPIC-1 objectives, which becomes effective later this
month, does cover rsyslog and syslog-ng.
