Running LPRng 3.6.8 on a DEC Alpha 4100 with Digital Unix 4.0D.

I have about thirty printers running out of one printcap file with LPRng3.6.8.
Most of these printers are networked HP LaserJets of various types from HP4Si's
to HP4050's and they are all configured the same, something like this:

        reg
                :[EMAIL PROTECTED]
                :lf=/usr/spool/lpd/reglpd/ERRLOG
                :sd=/usr/spool/lpd/reglpd
                :sh
                :tc=.hpnorm

        .hpnorm
                :bl=
                :cm=HP LaserJet 80x66 Portrait Mode
                :ld=\033E\033&l0o1L\033(s10h12v0T\033&l2e7.55c66F\033&k2G
                :mx=0

These printers generally run without mishap printing text or PostScript or
PCL (mostly text) and have done so for a year now except for three printers
that periodically abort jobs in random places. All three printers are
HP4000 or HP4050 models and the jobs are large text files but not huge and
the jobs are typically automated and run between 8:00PM and midnight and
run just fine if released the next day.

These printers are not heavily used from the unix side, maybe two dozen jobs
a day, but they are also accessed directly from an assortment of windows boxes
using lpr Is there anything special about an HP4000 or do they just have
attitude? The 40x0 printers are new, having replaced HP LJ III's served off
of a VMS machine, and have given this trouble since they were installed in
January.

I would appreciate some suggestions on how to diagnose this problem and some
techniques to minimize the impact of the problem if I can't fix it.
