Where do I need to add this option?  Is it inserted with the fileter statement 
in the printcap file or somewhere else?

Use the ifhp filter with the "tbcp" option. Either on a parallel, or in 
networked connection it will solve the problem. It will do the binary-ascii 
conversion you need.
