the cpu utilization appears to be caused by a call to
'select' being set with a 1 microsecond timeout, insead
of a 1 second timeout.
Just a guess now, but I think I did 'tv_usec = 1'
instdead of 'tv_sec=1'. This would explain the loop.
When I get back to the office on Friday I will check this out.
