If we are talking about large amounts of data, so that you'll need
a commercial RDBMS to store the data, I think it is ok to keep it
as a commercial support.
On the other hand if we are talking about 300 users and 5 printers
(my case) it doesn't take more than 50 lines in perl to connect to a mysql
database and verify if the user is able to print (thanks to the great
accounting.pl!), and 30 lines in sh/awk/sed to control the daily usage, quota
update, etc (based, again, on the usage of accounting.pl)
Just my opinion.
