LPRng works for me. Accounting (specifically with ifhp) work very well
indeed. Page counts are taken by querying the hardware page counters on
the printer before and after the job.

I tend to remove the rpm's of lpd, rhs-printfilters, and printtool, then
install LPRng. YMMV. It doesn't really matter that much as long as
printing works when you're done. It's better to remove the old system
first for tidiness, though.

The ifhp filter handles this stuff. It'll use the file utility to work
out what something is, and it wouldn't be too hard to set up something.
Suggest gzipped/tarred, just unzip/tar. PDF, install acrobat reader, and
use acroread to convert to PostScript. PostScript can be PCL'ified with
ghostscript. Not much you can't do really...
