We also have an HP8550DN and also had some problems.
Try the following printcap (it works fine).
b03f4s-lcA3|rm=viws110|HP Colorlaserjet 8550DN, A4

:rw:sh:mx#0:lp=b03f4s-lcA3%9100
:if=/opt/ifhp_3.4.2/libexec/filters/ifhp "-Za4,plain,intray4"
I also changed the ifhp.conf settings for the 8550DN (see attached file).
It has corrected settings for intrays (tray1-4), paper sizes (a4-a3) and
transparency support.

This is a Linux box - printing works with the lprng and ifhp in the Debian
2.2 release. What have I done wrong?
