..is that if I turn off the printer and print to it, the spool files ( cfA670... & 
dfA670...) are never seen in the spool dir as noted in my previous (egregiously long) 
posting.  The process that
moves the spool files is not dependent on the printer actually accepting them.

however if I unload all the parport modules, the spool files remain in the 
/var/spool/lpd/lp directory, for at least a few minutes (within about 5 minutes, they 
also disappear), so the process IS
trying to talk to the parport (and when the parport modules are autoloaded, the 
process can continue).  

However it only loads the 'parport_probe' and 'parport' modules and these are not 
enough to allow a successsful autoprobe of the parport - it needs the parport_pc mdule 
as well.

Slightly dazed by the effort to print...
