It works fine for us.  We have all HP printers.  There are a few HP models
which have given us trouble though.  The HP2500CM is completely worthless.
You can't get *any* status information back over a network connection, let
alone a page count.  The HP1600CM tended to undercount the pages (which is
an error in the right direction, for us anyways).  IFHP seemed to detect
that the job was over and use the page count before the last page had
actually been printed.  There is probably a way to fix this, but I never
bothered to spend much time on it.

We did page counting all last year, then started charging for printing
starting fall term.  There have been plenty of complaints from students
about the cost (duh!), but no technical problems with the system.  I think
you'll find that the hard part is creating a set of policies and
procedures for handling complaints about billing.  What happens if the
print quality is below expectations?  What if your computer lab staff
makes a mistake and the user gets charged for it?  :)
