Here's how we handled this general situation with (other) HP printers,
going on comments from the LPRng author:
Using the printer console menus, select and set a media type for each
tray that matches its primary use. Then, via your print filters, -Z
options, or whatever, make sure to select by _media_type_, not by
physical input tray. This may require some sort of translation of
options or translation based on printer name, or whatever sort of
scheme best suits your printing system setup.
