Reading over the PLRM (PostScript Language Reference Manual) Supplement's
section on IO device control, I see that AppSocket is not really a Tektronix
invention. It is an Adobe invention. I see that the LPRng HOW-To refers to
Socket API as the bi-directional communication on TCP port 9100, which I believe
is an HP invention.

Anyway, I have seen people mistakenly call Socket API enabled printers AppSocket
enabled printers (as Xerox does with the DocuPrint N2125).

And then Adobe's documentation (what there is in the PLRM Supplement) says that
AppSocket uses TCP port 9101 for setting up a job, TCP port 9100 for data
communication (sending the data and receiving error messages, etc..), and UDP
port 9101 for receiving status messages.

The closet I have seen to a "true" AppSocket implementation is a Tektronix
Phaser 850DX. But it doesn't use TCP port 9101 for setting up the job. It
deals only with only with TCP port 9100 and UDP port 9101.

The PLRM Supplement says to contact Adobe developer support about AppSocket
documentation.

Does any one have this documentation and verify whether I am full of hooey?

Finally, does LPR-ng support "true" AppSocket printers? I see tht ifhp does
some of this, but I am concerned that it only does the TCP ort 9100 stuff (and
none of the TCP/UPD port 9101 stuff).

Again, am I full of hooey?

Thanks in advance,

Tom
