Hi,

I'm trying on parallel port, HP laserjet 6P.
Currently, I know that you have to do,

- set BIOS to use bidirectional port (choose EPP)
- use kernel 2.4.4 that supports IEEE standard for parallel port
so you can read the page count from the printer. The older kernel
does not support, even the new kernel, you have to recompile the
kernel, and configure it to support parallel port (make xconfig
  in /usr/src/linux).
- the parallel cable must support IEEE standard (full duplex
communication). In my country, there are so many cheap cables
that do not support the IEEE standard. Notice the word
"IEEE 1284" must appear on the cable. I'm thinking of ordering
  from HP.

However, I'm installing the new kernel and not yet succeed to perform
page count. If somebody knows how to resolve the problem about the
parallel port, please ...
