If the fix that Jason outlined is in the next version of IFHP (it did nothing for me when I patched mine, but apparently it fixed Jason's problems so YMMV) it would be interesting to see what affect it has on those of us with these silly printers.
I would bicker more with HP myself, the thing is I don't understand the internals of the PJL and all of that well enough to know what I'm really asking for. Perhaps the logfiles Fernando has would give them a clue?
