What we did is essentially this, plus or minus a few things. Ours is a routed print queue. The router script takes the incoming job, identifies the file type, shoots it through pstopdf, sucks the result into a MIME-attachment module for perl and sends the results off. We then dump the job by routing it to nullp, which makes LPRng toss the whole mess.
We're in the process of replacing gs with distiller and e-mail attachments with custom-ACL'd Web directories. We'll send a URL to the resulting PDF, instead of sending it as an attachment.
