I am puzzled. You say that the 'lpr_gwy' program is dying?

And that it is getting a '0 length file'?

But WHY is it trying to send a 0 length file?

I suspect you have a Novell problem here, and that the symptom is when
LPRng sends a 'Sorry, do not accept 0 length jobs' error back to the
Novell gateway that the Novell gateway dies.

You should contact Novell and get the latest release of the lpr_gwy
that does not have these problems.
