Toby,

I think that the permissions stuff is done before jobs get localized to
a queue.  Therefore, I think you have to do something like

  sudo /usr/local/LPRng/sbin/lpd -F -D1 |& tee out

run your lpc command, <ctrl>C, and look at the output.

At least, this is what I've been using successfully to look at the
permissions handling recently.
