It's difficult to distinguish between transmission errors due to signal distortion (bad cable etc) and actual hardware errors of the USB ports. I didn't think an Intel 440BX chipset could have a faulty USB port, but then Intel isn't known for bugless silicon. As parallel printers aren't necessarily supported under lprng and USB printers are unreliable, there doesn't seem to be much choice left for the home user.
