I'm re-posting my original message in the hopes that someone might
have some insight into my problem. Perhaps this message never made it
to the mailing list?

At any rate, I still can't get LPRng to work. I have been trying
everything.

Sorry. Yes I did mean configure.

I generated a printcap file several days ago using the lprng tool. I
included this below, but I assume this doesn't really tell us much. I
copied my printcap file to another directry, and then removed it from
the /etc directory. I then ran make install again. I got the same
error message, with one new addition. This time lpd failed to start.
No printcap file was generated.

(I assume that a printcap file is generated automatically on a mke
install?)

Here is the old printcap file:

# /etc/printcap
#
# This printer configuration file was created with lprngtool Version 1.3.2
# Any changes made here manually may be lost if lprngtool
# is run later on.
#
# It is NOT advisable to modify this file by hand. To add, modify, or
# remove printers, please use 'lprngtool' to avoid corruption.
