We solved this problem by modifying the default lpd.conf and setting 
done_jobs=0  (it defaults to 1)

I think what was happening was that the newly submitted job was getting 
immediately removed from the queue and the "done" job would remain.  I didn't 
have a chance to track this down in the code, but perhaps others on this list 
can find it.  Or perhaps it's not related and this was a coincidence.  However, 
it seemed to fix the problem for us.
