We had an interesting (if having people want to lynch you can be called
"interesting") problem here recently.
For the first two months of the fall semester, some print jobs sent to a
particular subset of queues were causing the printers to enter an infinite
"processing job" loop. Somebody finally sent me a document which reproduced the
problem reliably.
Now for some history. About 4 years ago, we encountered a problem printing Word
documents from Win98 to some printers. Occasionally, the letter "y" would be
omitted if it occurred at the end of a word. Very cute.
This problem turned out to be due to a bug in a fix to the Win98 Adobe
PostScript driver which was supposed to fix a problem with printing Japanese
fonts. It occurred only if the PSVersion number in the PPD file was less than
2015. The solution was to set the PSVersion number to at least 2015.
When I upgraded the drivers for all platforms last summer, I decided to leave
the PSVersion kludge in. What could it hurt?
It turns out that if one uses PSVersion 2015 rather than 2014, the PostScript
generated by the Win2K/XP driver will be over 4 times as large and will cause
the printer to hang.
Moral: PSVersion in PPD file matters.
