Hi all, many thanks to all who responded to my problem. I changed two things to activate remote printing.
1st) I added default lpd_listen_port=on to the config file. Still netstat -anp | grep 515 came up empty. Next I changed the start procedure in /etc/inint.d/lpd to add -p 515 to the argument list of lpd, thus lpd is started by startproc $LPD_BIN -p 515 -L /var/log/lpd.log with $LPD_BIN containig /usr/sbin/lpd That solved the problem.
