I have officially classified this printer as a 'problem child'
printer, in that it requires the same level of attention as a spoiled
3 year old. HP support seems to have also tried to treat this
printer in the same way, and will attempt to forward the problem
to other babysitters in their organization until you get tired of
waiting for an answer. The problem appears to be related to some
software issues in the TCP/IP stack.

The solution that I have recommended is to purchase one of the remote AC
power control units that has a TCP/IP interface, and to power cycle the
printer if it does not respond after some reasonable time.

Another solution is to have your lab vandalized and the printer stolen.
(Wear gloves and remember to disable the security cameras.) Dropping
off the loading dock while sending it out for repairs is also good.

You might get your purchasing department to demand a refund on the
grounds of defective merchandise, or not to purchase any additional
HP ^H^H^H Compaq mechandise until they fix the printer and/or replace
it with a better model.

I think that this and the HP8500 have caused more headaches than any other
printer I have encountered, including ALL the Ricoh printers.
