I use the hp2200 TDN with foomatic. works fine with duplex and friends.

what is foomatic?

I was very happy with the LPRng - but can't really figure out what is
wrong with ifhp-3.5.10 ( or my configuration! ).

Foomatic (from www.linuxprinting.org) is the standard system for integration of printer drivers with spoolers, it is used by every major distro.

Foomatic has a database of currently 1111 printers and near 250 drivers with information about printer capabilities, the driver's GhostScript command lines, and all user-adjustable options, as resolution, quality, paper trays, ...

Foomatic makes it easy to configure every listed printer (and also any native PostScript printer) easily with every spooler. You simply get a PPD file for your printer/driver combo and a universal filter (which works with all known spoolers).

Supported spoolers are CUPS, LPD, GNUlpr, LPRng, PPR, PDQ, CPS, and spooler-less printing is also supported.

Instructions for setting it up with LPRng you find here ("LPD Docs" link in green menu on the left of the front page):

http://www.linuxprinting.org/lpd-doc.html

So you can stay with LPRng.
