We've switched to LPRng/ifhp for most of our campus printing. It's mostly
working (aside from some hard-to-fix duplex problems). Most of our
printers are HP8??0 printers with at least 32MB of memory.

We've seen a significant increase in printing time. That is, it takes a
lot longer to print most documents. We're also seeing a lot of the 79
errors that others on this list have mentioned.

I can understand delays between jobs: we're using ifhp to get page counts,
so the printer doesn't receive the next job until the current one is
finished (e.g. no multiple-job caching). What confuses me are the delays
during jobs. It seems like the printer only receives a page at a time.
A page is ejected, the data light blinks for a bit (10 seconds to a
minute), another page is ejected, etc. Our old system was stupid, but it
kept the buffers full and the printers busy, even when the pages had a lot
of graphics.

Is it possible that some part of the printing system is trying to
"protect" the printer by only sending data a page at a time? Could the
switching between Postscript (for the print jobs) and PCL (for the page
counting, etc.) be causing problems (I suspect that this switching is
accounting for some of the 79 errors, but I don't have enough data to
prove it)? Might ifhp be attempting to get status information during the
job?
