Hello,

Beginning back in Oct 2002, I've sent the same email 3 times directly to
'[EMAIL PROTECTED]' with some corrections to the LPRng 'Printing
Cookbook' (etc). I've never received any reply and after periodic checking, I
continually see that none of my changes have been addressed/fixed.

Despite the fact that I no longer actively use LPRng, I saw this mailing list
and recently joined in the hope that this might be the proper venue to
finally see my corrections addressed in some fashion.

Below is a copy of the email I sent on 15 Oct 2002, 16 Dec 2002, and 30 Aug
2003.

Any comments or suggestions are much appreciated.

Hello Prof. Powell,

While getting LPRng working with my Tektronix Phaser 740 printer, I have
located 2 errors in the LPRng manual entitled "The Printing Cookbook", both
in Section 5.3 -- "Taming the Wild Phaser Printer".

The first error is a trivial typographical one -- Tektronix is misspelled as
"Tektronics".

The second error occurs in the "Offline Test:" command line:

   ifhp -Tdev=trace,debug=1 (...)

which should read instead:

   ifhp -Ttrace,debug=1 (...)

That is, the first 'dev=' occurrence in that command is erroneous -- it
prevents the command from working properly. The proper "dev=" definition
appears later on in the command.

Hope this helps....

I also noted that the '/etc/ifhp.conf' file that came in my Slackware 8.1
GNU/Linux distribution erroneously has the Tektronix Phaser 740 described and
configured as PostScript-only when, in fact, this printer natively does PCL 5
(which of course includes HPGL[/2]) as well as PostScript. Reconfiguring the
"[ phaser ]" section of this file by changing "pcl@" to "pcl" enabled the
proper PCL and HPGL support, as confirmed by follow-on test prints.

I don't know if there's a way for someone to fix the default "ifhp.conf" file
that is distributed with LPRng, but I mention this for whatever it is worth.

The Phaser 740 definitions are 'ganged' in the section "[ phaser360 phaser740
phaser750 phaser850 ]" but I'm not certain whether all of those printers
support PCL, so I'm at a loss as to what to recommend, short of splitting the
Phaser 740 into its own section.

If I can provide any more details or assistance with any of these matters,
feel free to contact me.

Thanks for providing a great package! Your work is much appreciated!
