As an addendum to my previous message... I've just done a very small test, specifically dumped the printcap data into a file...
echo bptest|pcap-query > /etc/printcap ... and told lpd.conf to use this. And now everything works fine. So, it seems to me that since LPRng-3.8.21, something has changed such that it won't get its printcap data from our program correctly. I should restate that as far as I'm aware this program behaves exactly as it should - it's passed a queuename on STDIN and outputs the printcap data on STDOUT. Versions 3.8.21 and before worked OK with it. I'd be interested in hearing the experiences of other LPRng users who use a program to distribute printcap data, rather than a static file. I've seen other problems relating to this (see a previous post of mine about "lpq -a status" not working correctly.)
