Hi

I'm using LPRng to print jobs originating from a samba installation. I have at the moment a setup where I pass the jobname from samba to lpr using the -J option, which works jolly fine.

My current setup records the name of the printjob to the printeraccounting system, which is very nice when students want to check

their bill. It also enables me to provide the jobname back to samba for presentation to the windows box - However it is only able to return a limited number of characters, as it is limilted by the output from lpq.

Samba has the ability to store the jobname and relate it to the name of the (samba) spoolfile, so that an output from lpq with a jobname like smbprn35345345.gdfv is automagically presented to the windows user as the 'nice' original jobname eg. "Microsoft Word - LPRng is the best printingsystem ever made.doc'.

I would like to be able to display the 'nice' and long jobname to the windows user, but in order to do that I have to have a lpq command that displays the (samba) spoolfile as the jobname, which I won't get at the moment if I user the -J optin to lpr.

However if I could get a cofiguration option for lpq that made lpq display the filename as the jobname and not the jobname provided to lpr,

the I could do accounting with the 'nice' jobname and use the feature in

samba to provide windows user with 'nice' jobnames.

As far as I can see, the information needed is available in the control file, and lpd already have some configuration options to control the output to lpq. So I guess I could take a very deep breath and try to implement this myself, but perhaps someone with more recent C programming skills could do this in a jiffie :-)

Is this idea totally stupid, or could other people than I use such a feature ?

Regards

-Michael
