Trying to do a test of the lprng system to determine if authenticated users show up as named entities in the queue (i.e. jsmith instead of nobody).

Current setup that is working fine is a Solaris box that does not have DCE as part of its configuration, and users printing do so via samba. Thus, all users simply make a connection to the print box as nobody (although the Mac users, which use ldap to authenticate, always show up as named entities!).

To do this test, I am simply creating a queue on a smaller Solaris box that does have DCE running. It also runs samba. I've twiddled a lot of things, and tried several different flavors of the samba config to no avail. Typically, the Windows client seems to print or gets a "There is a problem printing..." dialog box.

Looking at the Samba logs, I always see this:

Unable to open printcap file /usr/local/etc/printcap for read!

no matter what samba config I use. I suspect this is a Samba problem, but I am not 100% sure and wanted to see if anyone else had hit this one, or if there might be something I am missing here. I _can_ print on the test solaris client using the simple commands shown in the tutorial.

any suggestions appreciated.
