Hi,
You can also activate the logging abilities of your SQL driver.
For example for postgreSql, you only need to add @?loglevel=2@ at the end of 
your JDBC URL.

If this is sufficient for you, I will clause this issue.

When debugging a new database destination, failures can be rather opaque and 
tricky to diagnose.  

The attached patch adds some debugging and error output that makes what's going 
on much clearer.
