Minutes for UA MOPS meeting, March 2, 2006

In attendance:
Tim Axelrod, Kobus Barnard, Alon Efrat, Bongki Moon, Scott Morris

Main points:

   1. We decided to do minutes and mail them to [EMAIL PROTECTED] This is
the first point of the first set of minutes. It is still to be decided who
      will do them.

   2. We revived the topic of restructuring some of these meetings to
include a telecom with U. Pitt./CMU. Alon is taking the lead on
      arrangements.

   3. We discussed orbit fitting. Scott is currently working both with OrbFit,
and ORSA. A key ORSA person (Pasquale) is in town, and Scott reported on
his meeting with him. Scott is having trouble matching OrbFit performance
with ORSA, and has been in discussion with Pasquale on this. ORSA has some
nice features. OrbFit is difficult to call externally reliably. However,
currently OrbFit seems to have a performance and accuracy edge. (It runs
faster and can find a better initial orbit). Scott is still working on
getting OrbFit differential corrections working from our C code.

   4. Technical discussion focused on whether or not velocity estimated from
the pair images taken immediately after one another will be useful. The
      following points where made:
a). The amount of trail will be very small. It will take effort to get
             even a rough estimate.
b). Nonetheless, some thought that it would be helpful.
c). Velocity information can easily be used as appropriate by the
             U.A. approach.
d). Using velocity seems most pertinent to the tracklet stage
             (U.Pitt/CMU).
