Yes, LSST will preserve every byte of every released catalog.
I hope I did not imply otherwise! Every release will be kept
(at least) in deep storage. The question is how much disk space
we should assume we will need for serving these older releases
from disks and what type of IO, MB/sec we should assume.
I know we may have some extra "free" space because of the
disk IO requirements, we actually started to consider using part
of each disk for high-speed access and treat the rest as
storage of infrequently accessed data (such as old releases).
