Subversion 1.4 has been released. The 1.4 client is allegedly significantly faster for certain operations, such as status (even if the server is older).

Here are release notes:

***** Quoting from this document:

Older clients and servers interoperate transparently with 1.4 servers and clients. Of course, some of the new 1.4 features may not be available unless both client and server are the latest version. There is no need to dump and reload your repositories; Subversion 1.4 can read repositories created by earlier versions. To upgrade an existing installation, just install the newest libraries and binaries on top of the older ones.

***** end quote

In other words, you may upgrade your subversion client (and the lsst archive maintainers may upgrade the lsstarchive server), whenever you wish.

However, if several people are sharing the same working copy, or if you use more than one client, beware that the subversion 1.4 client uses a different (more efficient!) format for your working copy. The 1.4 client will automatically update your working copy when first run, but then you cannot use that working copy with older clients. Of course you can always check out another working copy.
