Jeff,
Today Chip and I visited the principle Telecon companies in Chile for a follow up on pricing. (Telefonica, Telmex, and Entel). Two of the visits were very encouraging and we believe as a result that we can state categorically we will come in on budget for the 10Gb from La Serena to Santiago. That is to say ~$600,000 p.a. There is still some work to be done on this front in terms of improving conditions, mtbf, redundancy etc, which will take place over the next month or so. It was stated that at the appropriate time (~2008) a "Letter of Intent" could be signed to lock in the price and conditions, subject of course to all the usual Governmental conditions.

On the second front, with Eduardo Vera and ALMA/Mining, we are continuing to explore avenues and opportunities, and this has not been discarded in view of the above. Our next Telecon meeting with the relevant people is Nov 15th.

My view is that we can now breathe easier wrt to this segment for LSST and anything better for Astronomy in Chile will be icing on the cake.

Many thanks to Chip for his invaluable help in this exercise.

ron
