According to folks in my network, our friends in China are trying to propose
wechat to countries in Africa as a potential solution to how to trace
individuals exposed to the coronavirus.
My colleagues and I think that that is generally a bad idea for lots of reasons
-- but mostly because people will use the technology for other authoritarian
things just because they can.
Any good ideas on how this might be done in a way that enhances privacy from
some of your smart friends?
I have seen some ideas -- but they are all generally sucky... but are cheaper
than using global ad services. The big guys (such as google are willing to
share their info -- but I think they recognize the folly of that -- as people
care about security today and privacy tomorrow -- especially with folks with
deep pockets that they can go after in court.
The ad service guys who are trying to sell new products... are generally too
expensive -- and their solution is truly creepifying...
