I agree that there are very good existing tools out there for burn-in,
but as a testing harness, LTP takes the cake.  Using it we can very
closely simulate the sort of load that the machines will experience in
production, so it makes a great hardware validation tool as well
(although you're absolutely correct that it's kernel-centric).
