When lcov was added to the LTP CVS we decided to minimize the number of check-ins by leaving the CVS version information untouched. When a new release is made, 'make dist' is called to update the version information in the resulting release files. These files are then provided for download. Now I agree that in recent times, the CVS version was referenced quite often and it may be time to adjust the process. The script in the RPM files as well as the released .tar.gz files all contain an updated version string.
