Please read INSTALL; it clearly and succinctly states the autotools
requirement and states how the tests must be installed in order to work. In
this particular case your copy of autoconf and automake is too old (and I'd
take a stab that your m4 is also too old); that's part of the reason why you're
running into compile failures (my guess is that you didn't run configure to
completion and the defaults config.h was setup to function with more recent
copies of Linux -- it's your job to hand tailor the config.h if you don't have
a sufficiently new copy of autotools to use...).
