Yes, there are #define's in all my linux toolchains for mips. They all define: __MIPSBE__, __MIPSBE, _MIPSBE, MIPSBE for big endian and __MIPSEL__, __MIPSEL, _MIPSEL, MIPSEL for little endian. I think we can risk to use these defines directly instead of introducing our own.
