The xlock -remote works great.
The lts.conf.readme contained a configuration for X_MOUSE_EMULATE3BTN.
Setting this to "Y" in my lts.conf did the trick.

Not sure about the screensaver, but I have an xlock icon on my user's
desktops
that runs the command
/usr/X11R6/bin/xlock -remote
The remote flag is key. If a user presses this it will pick a random
screensaver and lock the screen until they put their password in.
