From the LTSP download page, I have installed:
kernel 2.2.18
lts-core 2.08
Mach64 X server 2.0
onto RedHat 7.1. All standard pieces.
I made changes to lts.conf that should be very standard and sensible.
I have put Etherboot 5.0.3 into a 3com 3c590 card at the workstation.
There's an ATI card in there too- based on the Rage XL.
Now, Etherboot runs, DHCP works, TFTP gets the kernel, it runs and
gets a root filesystem, the ramdisk is made and formatted, rc.local
and rc.setupx run, the X server starts, and:
fh_verify: ltsroot/dev permission failure, acc=3, error=30
and the workstation is stopped at the root window. xdm does not run.
I have read the troubleshooting guide, under the "fh_verify errors on
server while invoking X on the workstation" section. This is talking
about the issue of the standard X server doing an unneeded permission
change on /dev/tty0 and /dev/tty2. However, I am not using the
standard X server from a distribution!
There are two things to note in the fh_verify error message. One, the
combination of acc=3 and error=30 means that an attempt was made to
mount /dev twice, which is illegal in NFS. Two, it isn't complaining
about /dev, but /ltsroot/dev.
The X server does not understand where root is located for it. It is
trying /ltsroot/dev, instead of /dev, which would work. So NFS sees
it as a second, illegal mount attempt.
I've posted on this before, but was flailing around until some
experiments, and more reading, was done. Now I have RTFM and am
frustrated. The X server, provided by LTSP, means that only some
kind soul at LTSP can tell me what they compiled in there. I don't
relish patching and compiling my own X server, and indeed, LTSP
itself is all about relieving everybody who wants to network boot
from being forced to do so.
My guess is that some parameter is not in lts.conf that's required.
But I'm stuck. Can anybody help me?
Cheers.
