Is this new to 2.09pre3?  I built my own kernel for LTSP 2.08, and didn't do
anything to do with initrd, as far as I recall.. just selected the options I
wanted included in the kernel, compiled, and placed it in the appropriate
place in the "lts" directory.  Is using an "initrd" absolutely *essential"
for 2.09??
